Business Information Systems (BIS) is a four-year degree programme that specialises in key business and technology skills, providing students with an excellent springboard for a successful career within IS or business related sectors. BIS Year 1
Commencing with introductory business and IT modules the first half of year one is specifically designed to ensure all students are equally skilled to successfully complete the course. All modules are worth either 5 or 10 credits. Typically a module for 10 credits is the equivalent of 2 lecture hours and a 5 credit module is 1 lecture hour. Also, once you join BIS you will have practical/laboratory hours assigned where you spend time in the BIS labs working with hardware and software. Tutorials are assigned to business modules.
Module Overview Students are required to take modules to the value of 60 credits.
Introduction to MIS and Introduction to SAD Techniques (10 credits)
– Provides a foundational introduction to information systems and gives the student an insight into the central concepts within the field. Such concepts include how to analyse and document information systems, which is vital to any successful IT project implementation.
Principles of Programming (10 credits) – Introduces students to the fundamentals of software programming through Microsoft’s VB.Net. While grasping the basics of the software development process, students also get hands on experience with Microsoft’s development environment (Visual Studio). This is the platform used by all Microsoft software developers.
Technology including Internet Development (10 credits)
– Learn the basics of web development and build your own website by using technologies such as HTML and CSS.
Principles of Accounting (5 credits) - Introduction to the objectives and scope of accounting. Basics of Accounting concepts. Preparation of financial statements. Control accounts. Working capital management. Financial analysis. Basics of auditing and fraud recognition and prevention.
Introduction to Management Accounting (5 credits) - Introduction to the theory and practice of management accounting for organisational decision-making; basic principles of budgeting and cost analysis.
Economics of Business I (5 credits) – Learn the methods of economic reasoning in a business context. An introduction to the Theory and applied theory of relative prices and distribution of product under different types of market structure.
Psychological Aspects of Behaviour in Organisations (5 credits)
- Introduces students to the domain of industrial and organisational psychology and to ensure that students are aware of and understand current best practice regarding employee selection and hiring
Introduction to Business Statistics (5 credits) - Provides an understanding of the basic methods of business statistics.
Students
can choose one of the following options:
Introduction to Management and Organisation (5 credits)- To introduce students to the issues and processes of the challenges facing organisations and their leaders in today's competitive business environment. To develop the student's research, learning, communication and technology skills.
OR
Introduction to Marketing (5 credits) - Introduction to the marketing concept; the history of marketing; the role of the marketing manager; the marketing mix.

BIS Year 2
After receiving grounding in both information systems subjects and business subjects in first year, students progress to second year. Subjects taught to students are at an advanced level with the purpose of preparing students for work experience in the third year of the degree. There is a balance between technical subjects and business subjects and students are provided with a number of subjects from which they may choose. The overall objective of second year is to help students achieve a level of ability and confidence as regards their skills for the future job market.
Module Overview Students are required to take modules to the value of 60 credits. Of these, there are six mandatory modules which students must undertake.
Business Modelling, Systems Analysis, Systems Design and Change (10 credits)
- Looks at current or potential systems and assesses how well they are meeting/will meet the needs of a business. It considers aspects like efficiency, usability, scalability and cost. It provides you with the tools and techniques required to plan, design, develop, build, test and implement a system.
Database Management Systems and Distributed Environments (10 credits)
Are software systems designed especially to manage database systems, like Oracle and Microsoft Access. You will learn about database models, how to design databases, and communicate with them, the functions of the DBMS and various ways they can impact on business
Visual Programming (5 credits)
Introduction to Object Oriented Programming (10 credits)
is a method of designing applications and software that looks at particular objects and how they interact with each other. It is a method which is utilised across many programming languages.
Intermediate Management Accounting (10 credits)
Business Microeconomics I (5 credits)
In addition to these core topics, students must also choose electives from one of the following groups:
Group 1:
AC2214 Business Finance (10 credits) - Introduces students to the theoretical foundations of Corporate Finance.
Or two of the following:
Group 2:
MG2011 People and Organisation (5 credits) - To develop an understanding of the complexities and challenges of human resource management.
MG2007 Enterprise Planning and Processes (5 credits) - To provide students with insights into the processes by which enterprises operate and adapt to their external environment.
MG2902 Market Research (5 credits) - To introduce students to the main concepts, tools and techniques of market research.
MG2003 Consumer Behaviour (5 credits) - To introduce students to consumer behaviour.

BIS Year 3
The Third Year of the BIS Degree programme is the shortest in academic terms. Third Year examinations take place in March/April. After this students spend six months on business internship as part of our placement programme. While the academic programme provides students with rigorous grounding for the development and implementation of IS, the
aims at providing extensive hands-on experience.

BIS Year 4
The BIS degree programme has expanded considerably in recent years. The availability of additional resources makes it possible to offer module options in the final year enabling you to focus of your degree in a particular area. BIS 4 consists of core modules to the value of 30 credits and elective modules to the value of 30 credits
