The FuturICT flagship proposal intends to unify hundreds of the best scientists in Europe in a 10 year 1 billion EUR program to explore social life on earth and everything it relates to. The FuturICT flagship proposal will produce historic breakthroughs and provide powerful new ways to manage challenges that make the modern world so difficult to predict, including the financial crisis.

FuturICT is at the heart of a revolutionary 21st Century science project, which will use and develop information and communication technologies (ICT) to create a decision support system, combining data with models in order to solve the grand challenges humanity is facing. The ultimate goal of the FuturICT Flagship is to understand and manage complex, global, socially interactive systems, with a focus on sustainability and resilience. Revealing the hidden laws and processes underlying societies constitutes the most pressing scientific grand challenge of our century and is equally important for the development of novel robust, trustworthy and adaptive information and communication technologies (ICT), based on socially inspired paradigms. FuturICT will lift our knowledge of social and economic systems to a new level of understanding, enabling us to discover promising paths towards a sustainable future.

Participants include more than 200 teams of scientists from over 80 renowned universities and institutions throughout Europe, with collaborations all over the world. Individuals and a wide range of science organisations have also expressed their explicit support. The project now seeks to expand its collaborations with business and industry, with government and administrative institutions, foundations and funding organisations to unleash the full potential of the project and create the societal and economic leverage effect expected by the European Union.

This project is funded under FP7. More information is available at http://www.futurict.eu
